Splitters!

Saltbury Tales final cover small

I really like the sound of some words. It almost doesn’t matter what they mean; they just make a nice noise when you say them. One of my characters Aleyse, is one and another character, Debbie Stewart, agrees so much that she named one of her two world famous Rock bands Aleyse after her.

Now how about ‘bifurcate’? That’s another great sounding word. It means to fork or split in two. The problem is that it’s something my books keep doing. ‘Red’, became ‘Red’ and ‘Carol’ (no you haven’t seen ‘Carol yet, it’ll be out in the autumn). ‘Annie’ became ‘Annie’ and ‘Daughters’. And now ‘History Girls’ or whatever it really ends up being called, has also divided. At the moment I’m trying to keep things at least vaguely under control and the first book is being written as a short story called ‘Jenny’, which I was hoping to add to a book of such stories called ‘Saltbury Tales’, the rest of which I’ve already written. But how long is a short story meant to be?  This one has already reached 11,000 words, which is a bit big. But I have a nasty feeling I’m only half way through. Oh well, I’ve already got one 20,000 word ‘short story’ in the collection so maybe no one will notice another one!
