It’s strange sometimes when you’re writing, that things you thought you’d made up turn out to be true. My Rock star character Debbie Stewart has a three year old daughter called Sofie, although as she’s a bit of a handful, she’s often called Monster in the family. Young as she is, Sofie loves hanging out with her mother when she’s rehearsing or recording with her band. And as her big sister Hazel puts it:
“She could now pace the control room of Old Hall Studios in her dungarees and little pink trainers, pointing out equipment with a proprietorial: ‘Dat a mixie thing, dat a pressor, dat a don’t touch dat, Monster! Dat one go weeeee!” and so on. She had no idea yet how to work any of it, but Mummy did and that was way cool enough for her.”
Well Deb likes to be loud. She’s the band’s guitar goddess and likes to play through a double Marshall stack, so being a responsible mum she makes little Sofie wear ear defenders. To get her to wear them, hers have teddies on the ear cups. I thought I’d invented the whole idea, so guess what I just found on Amazon while looking for something else entirely.
