Tina Burns: a history.

A while ago I talked about the big change that occurred in one of my central characters, Annie Roberts, between the ‘Saltbury Chronicles’ as I originally planned them and the way they eventually turned out.  There is another much bigger change, though.

As it says elsewhere on this website:  “The ‘Saltbury Chronicles’ tell the story of two women, Hazel Fauld and Tina Burns from their time as best friends at school and on into adult life.”

But that wasn’t the original plan.  Initially the books were to be all about the Fauld family.  In fact, Tina was only supposed to have one major scene and if you’ve read ‘Carol’ you can probably guess which that was.  I’ll give you a clue, it takes place in the ‘Gemini Club’ with Hazel and Roisin present (and astonished).

Somehow though, Tina became ever more important and I think she is now the only character to appear in all of the books out so far, because although Hazel is mentioned in ‘Red’ I don’t think she actually appears there.  Tina even graduates to being the narrator in the two latest books: ‘Red’ and ‘Carol’, although Hazel will be back for ‘Sisters’ and its sequel ‘Roisin’.  And that’s not all, I have a book called ‘Gold’ fully written, but out of sequence, so it won’t be published for a bit, for which Tina is also narrator, and if you sign up for the email list on this web site, you get a free short story called ‘Sandie’ which is another with Tina in the staring role.
