The last two Saltbury books mention several new places to add to the geography of the town. For example, we have Jenkins’, a proper, old fashioned hardware store on the far side of the East Street river bridge.
‘Martine’ is based earlier than the rest of the series, in the mid 1970s, which means that it mentions places that might not still exist in Hazel and Tina’s day. There is P.D. Sherwin and Co, Johnny Sherwin’s father’s business on Cross Street, plus the then newly opened disco, the Impedance Club, so called because it sits directly opposite the University Electrical Engineering Dept on New Street.
New Street, as you know, is the oldest street in town apart from the High Street, which is itself the town’s lowest lying street, running as it does beside the river. I have put an updated map here on my website.
