1st v. 3rd person narration.

All of my Saltbury novels have a 1st person narrator.  That usually means either Hazel Fauld, or her best friend Tina Burns.  There are a few other voices still to come in the series, notably Rock goddess Debbie Stewart, but ‘History Girls’, the book due out next, has a new variation on the theme.

The 1st person viewpoint is a discipline that has to be strictly managed.  Unlike a more all-seeing 3rd person narrator, a 1st person has to be pretty much an eye witness.  They can only tell the story as they have personally experienced it, or at least been told about it by some other source.

But ‘History Girls’ acquires to what amounts to multiple 1st person narrators thanks to quotes from (fictional) historical documents, including 19th century diaries.  Tina is still the main narrator, but we also have 1st person accounts told by people who have been dead for over a century.  It’s quite an interesting combination.
